What You Need To Know

For rota team members, volunteers, swimming members and guests

Our aim is simple: everyone should be able to use and help run Shere Swimming Pool safely. Trustees have collective
responsibility for health and safety; the Chair provides governance and oversight, and the Operations Manager – Health & Safety has delegated responsibility for day-to-day health and safety management. Everyone using or volunteering at the pool must cooperate, follow the rules and take reasonable care of themselves and others.

Everyone at the pool

  • Follow the pool rules, safety notices and any instructions given by a Trustee or authorised volunteer.
  • Take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of other people who may be affected by what you do.
  • Do not interfere with or misuse safety equipment, protective equipment, plant or anything provided for health, safety or welfare.
  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, accidents or incidents promptly to a Trustee or the Operations Manager – Health & Safety.
  • In an emergency, follow the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and instructions from those managing the incident.

Rota team members

  • Be familiar with the Health & Safety Policy, Normal Operating Plan (NOP) and Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and follow the safe systems of work for your role.
  • Use the required safety equipment, protective clothing and safety devices correctly.
  • Report unsafe working practices or conditions, damage to plant/machinery/equipment, and all accidents immediately to the Operations Manager – Health & Safety or a Trustee.
  • While carrying out your main pool-operating duties, also be alert to unsafe use of the pool and breaches of pool rules
  • New rota team members must receive relevant health and safety induction before working unsupervised and must understand what to do in a fire or other serious emergency

Other Volunteers

  • This includes volunteers helping with cleaning, pool surrounds/toilets, replacing the pool cover and other occasional tasks.
  • Only carry out tasks you have been briefed or are competent to undertake. Follow any safe working instructions and use any protective equipment provided.
  • Know the basic rules for safe use of the pool and what to do if you see an incident, accident, hazard or emergency.
  • If you are unsure whether something is safe, stop and ask a Trustee or the Operations Manager – Health & Safety before continuing.

All Members

  • Follow the rules for safe use of the pool and help maintain a safe environment for other swimmers.
  • Children and guests for whom you are responsible must also follow the pool rules.
  • Report hazards, unsafe behaviour, accidents or incidents to a Trustee or appropriate volunteer.
  • In an emergency, follow instructions and do not obstruct those dealing with the incident

Guests

  • Guests must follow the same pool rules and safety instructions as members.
  • The member bringing a guest should make sure their guest understands the relevant pool rules.
  • Guests should report hazards or incidents and follow instructions given in an emergency.

If there is an accident, incident or emergency

  • Get help immediately and follow the Emergency Action Plan where applicable.
  • Know the location of first-aid facilities and, if your role requires it, the fire extinguisher and relevant emergency equipment.
  • All accidents and incidents should be reported so that they can be recorded, investigated where necessary and lessons learned.
  • Do not attempt a task or intervention beyond your training or competence.
